This year saw the St. Joseph's First XVIII compete in the prestigious Sun-Herald Competition with very little success. After a huge loss of players from last year's side, the First XVITI had to be blooded with new talented players. After a few short and sharp training sessions down on Carey Oval, the First XVIII seemed to be fitting together beautifully. With the Sun-Herald competition looming closer, we were in need of a practice match to warm up our skills and team play.
To counter for this, the First XVIII headed down to Geelong College to play their Senior team. With the boys looking for a solid win, the unexpected happened. We were totally out-classed by the Geelong College boys and we ended up a sorry one-hundred point losers.
After coming off a devastating loss to Geelong College, the First XVIII headed to Melbourne to play our first game in the Sun-Herald shield. This game was against the formidable Essendon Grammar Team. However, our confidence was again dented because we suffered a 25 goal defeat. With the boys' confidence very low we headed down to Kardinia Park to play St. Joseph's College, North Melbourne in our second match in the Sun-Herald Shield. This match, where the conditions were not suited to football, saw a great improvement in our performance. We ended up going down by five goals.
With the improvement of our last performance, we headed to Melbourne again to play the eventual winners, St. Bernard's Essendon. With the boys looking for another thrashing, we seemed to put our team play together. However, our endeavour and commitment didn't show on the scoreboard as St. Bernard's ran away with the game in the last half. They ended up one-hundred point winners.
This year saw sonic disappointing results, but however most of the boys enjoyed themselves. With a better attitude and preparation next year, the First XVIII should improve, Finally, I would like to thank a few people. Our thanks must go to Simon "Tails" Taylor who coached during the year, Paddy 'Teddy Whitten" McGlinchey for his inspirational speeches and managing, and Andrew "Medial" Sherry for being the runner and helper. Without these people we would have travelled nowhere.
Scott Williams - First XVIII Captain.
