The 1992 Saint Joseph's College 1st XVIII school football season differed greatly from what had gone on in previous seasons. This year, instead of playing different schools at random, we found ourselves in the formalised 'Association of Catholic Colleges' competition, a competition in which St. Joseph's had been awaiting a place for many years.
Our first official game in the A.C.C. competition marked a new era in S.J.C. 1st XVIII football, and first up we confronted the highly skilled, former winners of the competition Saint Bemards in Essendon. The boys took to the task very well, holding the Si Bernard's side for three quarters; however, a disappointing second term, which saw the opposition outscore us 8 goals to a tiny 0, left the game result almost beyond doubt. St. Bernard's took the honors 15.11 to 6.3. In our next game, we travelled to Bundoora to take on Parade College. Our side was undermanned with some key players missing because of inter-league commitments and injury. We were again outclassed by a better side on that clay and ended up going down by 72 points. The third game in the A.C.C. competition saw us come up against St. Joseph's, North Melbourne. Again we rose to the occasion and produced some of the best football seen so far. We ran out eventual winners by 27 points. In the next game in the A.C.C. competition we locked horns with Saint Bedes, Mentone. The surprise inclusion of AFL representative John Giorgiou seemed to stun the 1st XVIII, in a game where we found goals hard to come by. In the end we were thumped by a mammoth 142 points, 22.13 to 0.3. Following the Saint Bedes drubbing, the 1st XVIII underwent some major changes in an attempt to enhance performance. Expert speakers Mr D. Breheny and Mr D. Gleeson were called in and they pumped enthusiasm back into the team in preparation for their last two encounters. Our second last game for 1992 came down to a nail biting finish against De La Salle. In a very tight tussle in the final term, our boys dug deep and pulled out some inspirational goals in the dying minutes to snatch victory from De La Salle by a goal 11.7 to 9.13. In the final game of 1992 season, the lack-lustre Croydon College was no match for the brilliance of Saint Joseph's. In a bid to make the record four wins out of eight, we ran out comfortable 67 point victors 17.16 to 5.4. The experience gained in our first year of this standard of competition can be used as a building block for years to come. A special thanks must go to Mr Taylor the Coach, Mr Rankin the Assistant Coach and Runner, Mr McGlinchey the Team Manager, Tim O'Toole and Andrew King the Trainers, Ben Kavenagh the Promotions Manager and the Year 9 Boundary Umpires for the work they put in over the ten weeks, trying to make the 1992 season as successful as possible. The College would like to acknowledge the support given to the 1st XV111 football team by the following : Kardinia Veterinary Clinic, Newtown Football Club, St. Joseph's Football Club and Mr. Paul Bradley Jamie Gladman - Deputy Captain. |
