The St. Joseph's College First XVIII Football Team kicked off the beginning of the 1993 season by taking the long and uncomfortable bus trip to Assumption College, Kilmore. Assumption College is admired throughout the football world as the breeding ground for future A.F.L. stars and therefore a tough contest was expected. The game proved to be a true test of character, with all the players showing great determination. Final scores were: Assumption College 12.18.90 d. St. Joseph's 5.6.36
The next test was against St. Bede's, Mentone, and after a 142 point hiding last year, all the boys seemed keen to avenge the loss. The game turned out to be a highly skilled affair with both teams showing a high degree of determination. After trailing by 20 points at three quarter time, things were looking extremely grim, but with a spirited fightback in the final term we were able to cut back the margin to just two points, until two late goals by St. Bede's sealed the match. Final scores were: St. Bede's 11.10.76 d. St. Joseph's 9.7.61 Our first home game against St. Bernard's wasn't a fruitful one, as a 26 point loss further dampened the team's spirit. The next opposition was that of Parade, a steady increase in form over the previous weeks enlightened the hopes for victory. The consistent emphasis on pre-match concentration and cooperation by coach John Rankin, finally paid off with greater commitment and dedication. A 44 point victory was the result. Next game we found ourselves travelling up to Melbourne yet again, to play on the perfectly managed turf of Arden Street, the home of the Kangaroos. In a fairly low-skilled game, the team overcame all attacks from the prevailing North Melbourne St. Joseph's football side, edging to a comfortable 42 point victory. Enthusiasm was at a minimum for this game as our opponents De La Salle were very lack lustre. We found ourselves dropping down a notch, playing poorly and in the end struggling to win by 8 points. Our last match of the season had finally arrived and we played a much despised Chanel team. We jumped them at the start to kick a lot of goals. Chanel never had the manpower to catch up after that and we ran out winners by 36 points. Better players throughout the competition were Ben Glynn (Best and Fairest), Aaron Sutherland (Herald-Shield Best Player), Richard McGovern (Manager Award), Michael Costa, Matthew Bayles, Andrew Morrison, Dominic Rudd, Jamie McIntyre and the rest of the team playing a very major role in all of the victories. A special thanks goes out to John Rankin (Coach) who did a very good job, Patrick McGlinchey (Manager) who also played a major part yet again, and all the trainers, runners and water boys. Thank you all for a very successful season both on and off the field. Ben Glynn (Captain) & Andrew Morrison. |
