The enthusiasm of the senior students was demonstrated early on with fifty boys participating in a practice match on Zampatti Oval to vie for selection. Eventually nearly forty students pulled on the red, black and gold jumper to represent the College throughout the year.
Round 1 of the ACC competition kicked off for St Joseph's on a very positive note. Hosting St Bede's at Elderslie Reserve, Joseph Macula (Year 11) and Sam Allan (Year 12) were at their dominating best with frequent forward fifty entries ensuring a victory. Jak Kennedy-Hunt (Year 11) starred at full forward kicking six accompanied by some typical Nick Daniele (Year 12) wizardry. The electrifying start to the season was coupled with the addition of brand new silk jumpers. Round 2 saw us play the formidable Whitefriars, skippered by potential AEI, first round draft pick, Marc Murphy. The first quarter was impressive and we jumped our opponents and held a four-goal lead with the team working well. Mr Hood and Mr Breheny struggled to contain themselves and Mr Mick Hinds was boxing the air. Unfortunately, things went pear shaped and Whitefriars skipped away. Nevertheless, our players' commitment couldn't be questioned with Ryan Williams (Year 11), Sean Trevaskis (Year 11) and Bradley King (Year 12) exemplifying the resilient attitude. Jak Kennedy-Hunt was again pivotal in providing an avenue to goal, scoring three majors. In Round 3 we hosted Parade at home. Although we were unable to win, the younger players certainly stood up. The classy Christian Messer (Year 11) was devastating with his scintillating speed and impeccable goal sense finishing with four majors. It was in this game that the lanky Luke Wierzbowski (Year 12) was unleashed, stamping his dominance in the ruck to give the onballers first use of the ball. Thankfully, we were able to return to the winner's list in Round 4 against Mazenod, dishing out a ten-goal thrashing. Nick Daniele and Shaun Higgins (Year 12) both cashed in on the midfield dominance with five goals apiece and the miserly defence of Bradley King and Sean Trevaskis ensured a comfortable win. We were relegated to the losers list the next round against the highly regarded St Bernard's team. Again, it was pleasing to see the younger players perform well with Luke Ryan (Year 11) and Luke Driscoll (Year 10) adapting well to the increased speed andphysicality of First XVIII football. Ryan Williams (Year 11) the eventual winner of the First XVIII Best and Fairest dominated and provided relentless run off the back line. The last round of the ACC competition saw us journey to De La Salle to attempt to conclude the year on a winning note. Unfortunately, we fell just short losing by three points even though for the first time during the year we fielded a near full strength team. James Morgan (Year 10), Shaun Higgins and Sam Allan were solid contributors throughout the game. It is important that the efforts of Mr Paul Hood (Coach) and Mr David Breheny (Assistant Coach) are acknowledged as their commitment, time and understanding were greatly appreciated. Mr Greg Vaughan (Team Manager) was also invaluable. Staff members Mr Shane Dawson, Mr Mick Hinds and Ms Rachel Hovey (Trainers) were an integral part of the team and generously devoted their time each week. Stuart McLachlan (Year 12) |
