SJC Geelong 14.13 (97) def Parade College Bundoora 5.12 (42) St Joseph’s 2.3 6.7 8.11 14.13.97 Parade 2.3 2.6 3.10 5.12.42 GOALS: Charlie Travers 3, Ako Warakea 2, Max Lindrea 2, Ryan Birthisel 2, Will Batson 1, Josh Sorgiovanni 1, Lachlan Taylor 1, Darcy Crucitti 1, Keam Chan 1 BEST: Josh Sorgiovanni, Brad Jepson, Darcy Crucitti, Max Lindrea, Will Batson, Ryan Birthisel @ Elderslie Reserve, Newtown The 2017 Year 10 ACC Football team registered their first victory of the year with a 45-point win over a highly regarded Parade College side in round one of the season. With some players unable to play, we knew we had to put our best foot forward to achieve our first win for the year. The contest was hot early and Joeys missed multiple easy chances but Lachlan Taylor stepped up and laid the first blow on the scoreboard. Josh Sorgiovanni and Darcy Crucitti got their hands on it early and gave the team some real drive. After a late surge by Parade we went into the first break even at 2.3.15 apiece. Playing on and getting some fast ball movements being the main theme coming out of quarter time it was an inspirational 5-minute effort by Max Lindrea who snagged two classy goals which got the team up and about early. A complete quarter from the team and some really tough efforts from the backline restricted the Parade boys to just 3 points for the quarter. The Joeys boys donning the new white jumpers kicked 4 unanswered goals to storm to a 25-point lead going into half time. Moving into the third term against the wind we kicked an early goal to keep us on top of the Parade boys. It was a hard quarter with Brad Jepson and Will Batson showing class inside the packs and outside respectively put us in a good spot to put them away. We went into the final change with a 31-point lead. Whilst on top we continued to work hard as we had the breeze to our backs, an exceptional 10 minutes of play from Charlie Travers who snagged three classy goals all but sank the Parade boys who again turned some physicality to try and stop our run of goals. They were no match for the Joeys boys who ran out 55-point winners in a dominant display. Ryan Birthisel Year 10 Round 3 v WhitefriarsROUND 3 – Tuesday 9th May
SJC Geelong 15.10 (100) def Whitefriars Donvale 5.6 (36) SJC Geelong 3.3 7.4 13.6 15.10.100 Whitefriars 1.1 3.2 5.2 5.6.36 GOALS: Brayden Maurer 6, Brad Edwards 3, Max Lindrea 2, Jackson Paatsch 1, Clay Page 1, Will Farrow 1, Charlie Harris 1 BEST: Brayden Maurer, Jack Mullen, Josh Sorgiovanni, Brad Edwards, Connor Fopiani, Max Lindrea @ Whitefriars College Oval A fresh faced St Joseph’s outfit embarked on the journey to the depths of Donvale in hope of starting their season 3-0. Inclusions were made to fill the positions boys whose services were required elsewhere in either the classroom or in state representative football. The opposition crowd flooded the stands to watch another highly anticipated contest against two sides who were hoping to gain the edge over one another from the first bounce. With Whitefriars drawing first blood, the boys responded to take a 14-point lead going into quarter time courtesy of the brilliant overhead marking and sharpshooting from debutant Brayden Maurer. Whilst the lead was in the favour of the boys, there wasn’t much excitement around the huddle as a few missed chances caused the lead to be closer than what it should have. Some slick passages of play through the middle of the ground were able to stretch the opposition defence creating more golden opportunities for the front six. However, it was a 50m left foot torpedo was launched by mid-fielder Charlie “Charris” Harris which caused the lead to increase to 26 points heading into the main break. Some insightful words from the coaches at the half time address was what really turn the tables for the Joey’s boys as the boys took matters into their own hands to conjure a triumphant third term. Asserting their dominance from midfield, Jack Mullen and Josh Sorgiovanni provided the forwards with endless entries which resulted in more highlights for Maurer as Max Lindrea did the work on ground level. The spirit filled Joeys team doubled their lead at the close of the third term with 6 goals in 10 minutes to close out the quarter The last quarter was much to the credit of the backline as they were able to hold Whitefriars goal less as Joeys piled on 2 more goals to finish the match with a 64-point win. The star of the show was Brayden Maurer ending up with a tidy 6 goals straight on debut and the boys pelted out the familiar chorus ‘Ad Alta Virtute’ as they enjoyed their 3rd consecutive victory. We now look forward to three consecutive home matches against Mazenod, St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully and De La Salle. A reasonably fast start after a rev up from Holty ensured that we were on the front foot for the start of the game with ball magnets Jack Mullen and Charlie Harris giving our forwards first use and many opportunities in the opening term with it finishing our five goals to none. Throughout the second quarter, the Geelong boys continued to apply the pressure with our back six holding up very well. In the second half, it was quite clear that the trip down the highway was all too much for the Ferntree Gully boys as we kicked away with our boys having a very even goal kicking spread lead by notorious goal kicker Brad Edwards with five. With a key message of not to get complacent at three quarter time the boys once again asserted their dominance with debutants Jack Benstead, Will McLeish and Rory Monteith all getting their hands on the ball and having an impact. As the final siren went, the boys were extremely happy with their efforts as the scoreboard saw us 127 point victors. We now look forward to our next game which is the highly anticipated top of the table clash against De La Salle College at home. Skipper Brad Edwards won the toss and decided to kick with a howling breeze. Charlie Harris and Josh Sorgiovanni combined for the opening clearance of the game as the Joeys boys started beautifully, closing out the opening term with a 27-point lead. The momentum quickly swung in St Bernard’s favour in the second as they booted four goals to one to trim the margin back to just eight points at half time. The boys gathered their thoughts and ran out in what was sure to be a tough fight in the second half. Jackson Paatsch flicked the switch and got on top in the ruck, providing our midfielders with first use. The boys kicked four goals to no score in a great display of SJC footy. The stage was set for a big finish; St Bernard’s would kick with the wind in the last. However, Charlie Lever, Ryan Birthisel and Clay Page all stood tall in defence and Darcy Chirgwin – who ended up with four goals for the match – continued his outstanding form. The Joeys boys ran home victors and secured themselves a date with St Bede’s in the big dance next week. Shout out to Darcy Chirgwin who had now broken the SJC Year 10 goal kicking record with 23 majors for the year, overtaking Paddy McCartin from the 2012 season. Jack Mullen Year 10 |

The new look St Joseph’s team which included 11 first gamers looked to chalk up its second win of the ACC Year 10 Football competition from two games. The boys arrived at the ground to warm and sunny conditions and looked forward to a highly competitive game. As a fast start was going to be crucial, it was clear at the first bounce that both teams were on and the intensity was up. As the defence stood tall, it took a bit of brilliance from Darcy Chirgwin to bend one around the corner and kick the first goal of the day. Joeys continued to apply pressure to the opposition and played a fast style of footy thanks to a big start by Jack Mullen which resulted in opening up a 25-point buffer at quarter time. The second quarter began again with high intensity from both sides as they looked to get on top. Eventually Joeys opened the game up with some free flowing movement through the middle of the ground which provided good opportunities for the forwards. With the coaches directing us to kick the ball long to our tall forwards, it proved very effective as Ben Miller and Darcy Chirgwin continued to cause problems for the St Bede’s defenders. The Joeys boys’ dominance of the game continued as they reached the half time break with a 33-point lead. With the key message being to get a fast start in the second half and apply pressure early, it was the St Bede’s boys who came out firing as they didn’t want to go down without a fight. Heavy pressure was put on the St Joseph’s backline, as the St Bede’s forwards and midfielders proved major headaches for Joeys. As the margin narrowed, Joeys approached the final break with a 22-point lead. The stage was set for a big final term as St Bede’s looked to come home strong. This time, Joeys came out faster as they managed to lock the ball in their forward half and create opportunities. After repeat entries it was Jackson Paatsch who was able to snag a crucial goal from 40m out on the boundary to give Joeys some more breathing space. After some ‘Sam Hazelman chat’ with the opposition and a late surge from St Bede’s it proved a case of ‘too little too late’ for them as Joeys held on to win 14.10.94 to 10.8.68. It was a great start to Term 2 and we now look forward the next game against Whitefriars in week four. Jesse Clark Year 10 Football Captain Round 4 v MazenodROUND 4 – Tuesday 16th May

A fast start ensured that the boys continued their strong form from last week’s big win against Whitefriars with Charlie ‘35’ Harris’ in and under work providing many scoring opportunities for our forwards. Brad Edwards and Darcy Chrigwin cashed in as we finished the first quarter with a massive 43-point lead. Mazenod showed us what they had in the second quarter with the Joeys boys thinking we already had it in the bag, only extending the margin by 5 points from that of the first. After a review from Mr Lynch and Mr Holt at half time the boys came into the third quarter fired up. Charlie Harris continued to dominate; Josh Sorgiovanni found plenty of the footy and Jesse Clarks use of out of the backline created plenty of opportunities to for the big forwards to show their stuff and by three quarter time we had extended the lead to 78 points. The electrifying outside run from Max Lindrea and Will Batson in the fourth created a spark for forwards. In the end, the long sleeved duo combined for 10 goals with Darcy Chrigwin finishing with a big bag of 6, and Brad Edwards finishing with 4. Overall, it was a strong win for the boys, and we look forward to taking on St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully next week. Jay Dahlhaus Year 10 Football Leader round 6 v de la salleROUND 6 – Tuesday 30th May

Getting the jump on De La Salle, the boys pushed into a heavy breeze to pile on seven majors in the first term. Exhilarating play from key forwards Darcy Chirgwin, Brayden Maurer and Ben Miller who contributed with six goals between them made for a solid start. Kicking with the breeze, the goals kept coming and thanks to the back six, lead by Clay Page holding down the fort to maintain a healthy lead heading into the major break. Beginning the second half, a lacklustre start and lack of energy allowed for the boys from Malvern to be within striking distance as they piled on five unanswered goals. Determined not to go to water and maintain an undefeated record, the lads settled to consolidate a 28-point lead at the final break. After being shown a clean pair of heels in the midfield during the third, grunt work from Darcy Crucitti and Jay Dahlhaus made sure the lead was never in reach of De La Salle. Long sleeved menace Brad Edwards even hit the scoreboard with multiple snags alongside Ben “Dukes” Miller to give the Joeys boys a 49-point margin at the final siren. This result gives us a great opportunity to secure a home Grand Final and a chance to become ACC Champions. Congratulations to Darcy Chirgwin on slotting eight snags and breaking the Year 10 school record in a best on ground performance. We also congratulate Year 10 Football Captain Jesse Clark on his selection in the Under-16 Vic Country side for the upcoming National Championships. Looking forward to next week, St Joeys head up the highway to take on St Bernard’s Essendon in the final game of the regular season. Though St Joseph’s went in as favourites, St Bede’s were seeking vengeance from their last match up in round one, which was their first loss since year seven. Kicking with the wind in the first quarter, the boys created a three goal difference heading into the first break, much thanks to the energetic contributions from Darcy Chirgwin. The second quarter saw a fightback from a gutsy St Bede’s however they failed to take their chances due to the grunt shown by the back-six led by Clay Page. Thanks the midfield duo of Charlie “Lungs” Harris and Jack Mullen working tirelessly Joeys were able to maintain the lead going into the main change. St Bede’s weren’t going to go down without a fight keeping a frustrated St Joseph’s goalless in the third term as they narrowed the margin to just 16 points setting up for a huge last quarter. Reassurance from the coaches ensured the last quarter was to be played on our terms and that they were. With a blazing start to the quarter it was ‘Steady Steads’ Jack Benstead who held his nerve to open the account in the opening minute of the last quarter. A terrorising four-goal display of dominance from Darcy Chirgwin broke apart the last quarter with Ty Williams and Josh Sorgiovanni joining in on the party both finding the big sticks. As the final siren sounded, Joeys had come away with a 55-point lead as they were crowned Year 10 ACC Football Premiers and better yet Champions. Brad Edwards Year 10 Football Vice Captain |

The boys were all excited by this opportunity and plenty of energy was shown pre match in the rooms and out on the ground. After a rev up from Holty and Lynchy the boys ran out onto the ground rearing to go for the first bounce. The match was on right from the start, with both team applying a large amount of pressure. Some solid work from our backline allowed us to lead by seven points at quarter time with Darcy Chirgwin capping off the quarter by kicking a clutch goal after the siren in front of a loud and energetic Xavier crowd. Joeys dominated the second quarter as we controlled the game in our half, but we failed to make the most of our hard work as Xavier trimmed the margin to three points at half time. We went into half time having the belief and confidence that we could win this game. The siren sounded for the third quarter, but this time it was Xavier who became in control of the game. The difference is that they were able to make the most of their opportunities by kicking five goals to our three for the quarter. It came to the last quarter and we needed it to be a big one as we trailed by 15 points. The boys ran out inspired after a Jack Mullen speech to get the boys going. Some brilliant work from Josh Sorgiovanni in the midfield allowed Darcy Chirgwin to kick an early goal and bring life into the team. All the boys willed themselves to give a few last efforts, but unfortunately Xavier proved a bit too good as they again kicked away late to defeat us by 14 points with the final scores being 10.8.68 to 12.10.82. A large well done to all the boys for their performance in what was a great standard of footy. A big congratulations must go to Josh Sorgiovanni who received the Best on Ground medal for Joeys after an incredible performance. Whilst St Joseph’s College is not the first name to be carved into the Intermediate Herald Sun Shield and the year didn’t end as a fairy-tale finish, the memories and friendships created is something that will always stick with the boys as they boys aim for greater success in the coming years at SJC Football. HERALD SUN SHIELD SEMI FINALS
On Thursday 10th August, our ACC Premiership winning Year 10 footballers travelled to Craigieburn to represent the ACC in the inaugural Intermediate Herald Sun Shield. Our premiership squad was strengthened with the aid of six Year 9 footballers including Tanner Bruhn and Charlie Lazzaro who were both named All- Australian’s in the recent National U15 carnival. With the competition in its first year, champion schools came together from the best five associations in the state for a semi-final round robin day. Xavier College Kew (APS), St Patrick’s College Ballarat (BAS), Marcellin College Bulleen (AGSV) and Parkdale Secondary College (SSV) each had the goal of finishing in the top two positions on the ladder in order to qualify for the Grand Final on August 22nd. Matched were played as two 15-minute halves in 60km/h winds. Round 1 v Parkdale Secondary College Mordialloc (SSV) @ Highgate Reserve St Joseph’s 8.4.52 defeated Parkdale 0.1.1 SJC Geelong 2.2 8.4.52 Parkdale 0.1 0.1.1 GOALS: Jack Benstead 3, Charlie Harris 2, Jack Mullen 1, Ben Miller 1, Darcy Chirgwin 1 BEST: Charlie Harris, Charlie Lazzaro, Jack Mullen, Ryan Birthisel We arrived in Craigieburn for the Intermediate Herald Sun Shield with an energetic team ready to go. Our first game was against Parkdale from the SSV competition, who arrived just 10 minutes before the game with a crash on the freeway holding them up! In the first half we were kicking into a huge wind, which almost seemed impossible to score in. But with the trademark run and carry of our team, we were able to get the first goal through Charlie Harris who played a BOG performance. At half time it was us with lead 16 to 1 which was a nice surprise given the wind advantage. In the second half the wind played a huge part, with us kicking away with 6 goals in the 15 minute half to boost our score out to 52 and keeping Parkdale scoreless. Jack Benstead’s 3 goals along with Jack Mullen and Charlie Lazzaro’s run through the middle was the key roles that played a part in the perfect way to start the day. Round 2 v St Patrick’s College Ballarat (BAS) @ RAMS Arena St Joseph’s 6.5.41 defeated St Patrick’s 2.4.16 SJC Geelong 4.5 6.5.41 St Patrick’s 1.2 2.4.16 GOALS: Darcy Chirgwin 2, Jackson Paatsch 1, Brad Edwards 1, Will Batson 1, Jack Mullen 1 BEST: Jack Mullen, Josh Sorgiovanni, Darcy Chirgwin, Will Batson After a big victory over Parkdale in Round 1, the boys rolled into the game unaware of what St Pats had to offer. St Pats gained the first three clearances and the first goal of the game going into a heavy breeze on the main oval and had us a bit ‘shell shocked’. A bit of grunt work from Josh Sorgiovanni and Jack Mullen created opportunities for our forwards and sparked the comeback, as we kicked 4 goals straight and leading by 21 at the break. Will Batson’s hard work rate and Darcy Chrigwin taking strong lead up marks into the wind ensured the joeys boys a handy 25-point win against the highly fancied St Pats side. Round 3 v Marcellin College Bulleen (AGSV) @ RAMS Arena St Joseph’s 2.5.17 defeated Marcellin 1.0.6 SJC Geelong 0.5 2.5.17 Marcellin 0.0 1.0.6 GOALS: Tanner Bruhn 2 BEST: Charlie Lever, Tanner Bruhn, Jack Mullen, Charlie Walter After two wins to start the day, it only took one more win in the final two games to secure a spot in the Grand Final. With plenty on the line, we knew that it was going to be red hot contest against Marcellin. With the skipper losing the toss we were made to kick in to the howling breeze but we came up at trumps at half time by five points although unable to convert any of our chances. In the second half, we had the breeze but still found it tough to score. Eventually half way through the second half it was Tanner Bruhn who got on the end of the teams hard work to give us an eleven point lead. Tanner scored another quick goal to put it out of reach for Marcelin which earnt us a spot in the final. Charlie Lever was instrumental in the backline whilst Jack Mullen and Charlie Walter continued to have impressive days. We were still yet to get a taste of what we were to come up against in a fortnight’s time at Victoria Park, with Xavier to come in the final game of the day. Round 4 v Xavier College Kew (APS) @ Highgate Reserve St Joseph’s 2.2.14 defeated by Xavier 6.4.40 SJC Geelong 0.1 2.2.14 Xavier 3.3 6.4.40 GOALS: Matthew Keast 1, Charlie Walter 1 BEST: Josh Sorgiovanni, Charlie Walter, Jack Benstead, Will Batson With a position in the Grand Final in two weeks’ time already secured for both us and Xavier, the last match of the day was somewhat of a ‘dead rubber’. It allowed us to showcase some of our squad who hadn’t had the chance to play earlier in the day. Some 12 players were left out whilst 7 players played their first game of the day. Kicking against the wind in the first half, the boys showed some fight with Josh Sorgiovanni and Charlie Walter winning the contested ball in the midfield. Although we worked hard and had scoring opportunities, it was Xavier who was more efficient with the ball and they built a 20-point half time lead.
