LATEST NEWSAfter a must win game last week against Whitefriars, the boys were determined to keep up the winning streak. Needing to win every game for the rest of the season to have a chance to make the top two, the team took no chances against Mazenod at home.
With four players on debut coming into the team for the early 1pm clash at Elderslie Reserve, the coaches were looking to change things up and look to play players in different positions. With the emphasis of the game to play smart and own the outside, the boys got off to a good start. Bryce Dunell courageously put his body on the line in the first quarter, copping a cut to the ear requiring a few stiches. Bryce’s opponent came off second best, being carried off the ground in a stretcher with a bad concussion. The second quarter started and the boys were off to a flyer, with Gennaro Bove taking some strong intercept marks in the back 50 to hold Mazenod to no score for the quarter. On the other end of the ground Ollie Henry was starring, booting five goals before half time. The third quarter kicked off with the boys showing their fitness over the struggling Mazenod, with the pressure beginning from the backline and showing the results down forward. Both Fleeton brothers starred in the third quarter by attacking the ball hard and restricting Mazenod’s forward entries. Mitchell Keane was dominating through the midfield, pushing towards every contest and influencing the play. Jordan Thompson worked up and down the ground and managed to dominate the midfield and supply quality entries up forward. Going into the fourth quarter the boys had a stronghold on the game and knew how important percentage would be going into late in the season. Strong pressure from all around the ground caused numerous mistakes by Mazenod and led to the Joeys boys to kick six goals, with the backline managing to restrict the Mazenod to no score. With 30 seconds left the boys were desperate to kick their 15th goal, which led to the team getting their first game reaching over 100 points. The 2nd win of the year for the team truly showed our potential to play well together and showed great fitness all around the ground. The players on debut really stepped up and proved how much depth there is in the whole squad. Another early game at home against St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully will hopefully continue the teams winning streak and team culture throughout the whole squad. Matthew Issell Year 10 Leader |

In a week where his older brother Jack was named the NAB AFL Rising Star, Henry was dominant from the first to last quarters and showed himself to be one of the best players in the region. With several players on debut including Noah Gribble and Henry Walsh, the Joeys boys overcame a crash in the Burnley Tunnel on the way to the ground which saw the 90 minute trip to Donvale extend out to over two hours. The delay didn’t stop the boys in the first quarter kicking three goals to two to hold a narrow lead at the quarter time break. However, it was Whitefriars who came out strongest in the second, piling on six goals to three for the quarter to hold a 16-point half time lead. The boys needed to be more disciplined and composed in both attack and defence if they were to get themselves back into the game and Captain Gennaro Bove urged his boys to play smarter football at the main break. Henry was helped by goals to key forward Kyle Skene to get St Joseph’s back into the game in the third quarter with 200cm Henry Walsh starting to assert his authority on the game in the ruck. The Joeys boys kept Whitefriars to just two points in the third led by the backline pressure of Joel Fleeton and Matthew Issell. The stage was set for a thrilling last quarter with Whitefriars holding just a three-point advantage. In a seesawing last quarter that even saw the umpires feel the pressure of the game, it was Joeys who struck first after Henry Walsh slotted a goal from 50m out after being awarded a free kick. When Ollie Henry put through his sixth for the day with a few minutes left it looked like Joeys had sealed the deal, but a goal late to Whitefriars kept them in it before the siren sounded to give the Joeys boys their first win of the year in tense circumstances. Tom Thiele was outstanding on the wing and the ever-reliable Clay Bassett filled holes all over the ground wherever he was needed. The coaches were very happy with the 24 contributors on the day with each player playing important roles throughout the game to help the side get the victory. After playing the expected three top teams in the first three weeks, results will have to go our way to get a place in the finals from here but the opportunity to blood some new players in the next few weeks is exciting. We look forward to two home games in the next few weeks against Mazenod and St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully. ROUND 1 V ST BEDE'SROUND 1 – Tuesday 17th April

Once we arrived at St Bede’s oval, it’s safe to say that we all were pretty shocked when we saw how small the oval was, but we knew we just had to adapt to the conditions and just play footy. In the first quarter as we manned up we all knew that we had some very solid competition just by looking at the size of them which was a little off putting. We started off very rusty due to the fact that none of us had played together, which the scoreboard reminded us of with a tragic 4 goals to 1 goal, St Bede’s being the leader at the end of the first break. In the second quarter we were told that we needed to lift in some areas, one being our defence pressure and also to launch it long into our forward line where we would know that our big men Kyle Skene and Lachie Neate would take some strong contested marks. Later that quarter we saw big Lachie Neate go for a fly which was very impressive. The backline copped the constructive criticism on the chin and then went on and improved for the quarter. The rest of the boys also knew that they had to lift as well. Griffen Wilson started to assert his authority on the match and helped give us a successful quarter with 5 goals to 4. The third quarter was quite similar to the second except for the fact that the backmen improved magnificently with them only scoring 2 goals to our 5 once again, giving us a one goal lead going into ¾ time. This was the case due to our momentum going into the quarter. In the final quarter, we were very rowdy that we were in the lead but it was a shame that the scoreboard turned off, meaning that it was pretty hard with our rotations in the final term. Us boys were getting too confident with our game that we got a little side tracked giving them a few goals to break our momentum which really stuffed us up in the end. When the final siren went, no one really knew the outcome due to the scoreboard not working but we then found out we had been beaten which was pretty disappointing at first, but that was our first real game with each other which we all realised which made us really excited for our future of the team because we all know we got room for improvement. As soon as the boys stepped of the bus, we were switched on. After a tough loss to St Bede’s Mentone we were keen to get a win on the board. It was a promising start from the boys, as we went inside 50 via Tom Thiele who hit up star key forward Kyle Skene to kick one of his four goals and get Joeys off to a flyer. It was a tough game early, with neither team giving an inch and trading goals. In for his first game, Joel Martyn kicked a handy goal on the quarter time siren to give the boys a three-point lead heading into the second term. In the quarter time huddle Mr Lynch and Mr Wapling emphasized to keep up the intensity and keep launching it long to give our forwards a red hot crack. This was followed through by Mohammad Dagbossey’s brilliant tap work and Tikei Hiku using his burst of speed to break clear of multiple stoppages; driving the ball forward which resulted in two goals. Late in the quarter, Parade’s U15 All Australian key forward was doing all the damage, kicking two more goals to bring the margin to just eight points heading into the main break. To begin the third quarter, neither team could get on top before Matt Issell put his body on the line and flew over the top of the pack in the back 50 to take a strong contested mark. This set up a great passage of play which saw the ball move down the ground for Skene to boot our first goal of the third term. Midway through the quarter, the momentum shifted and Parade managed to kick a desperately needed goal on the siren from a stoppage, to narrow our lead to just two points heading into the final change. In the final term our backs were under siege and the pressure ramped up, as Parade kicked the first goal of the term within the opening few seconds. This continued, but with the likes of Finn McCombe and Joel Fleeton down back, the defence was holding up. It was an arm wrestle again but with the full forward for Parade kicking another two goals to give them a comfortable lead with little time on the clock, all looked lost for Joeys. Lachie Neate and Clay Bassett gave us a chance late surging the ball forward, with Tyson Neal bobbing up and getting on the end of one before Tom Scott putting one through the big sticks with just 30 seconds to go to bring it to just five points and keep our hopes alive. But with time running out, we fell agonisingly short. Overall, it was a very solid hit out from the boys, with many positives to take into next week’s game against top of the ladder Whitefriars at Whitefriars. Gennaro Bove Year 10 Football Captain |
